Summary
A four part training program will be conducted by the Northern Metropolitan Region for school councillors to provide information about their roles and responsibilities. The registration form included in the attachment should be returned by 23 April 2009. Principals are asked to provide information about this program to all members of the school council.
School council presidents and school councillors in the Northern Metropolitan Region are invited to attend four professional development sessions that will be held during Terms 2 and 3, 2009. The program is designed to provide school council members with information about their roles and responsibilities.
Each year enhancements are made to the sessions to ensure that school councillors are provided with up-to-date information about their roles, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development policy and guidelines, and school functions and processes.
The sessions cover the following areas:
Program 1:
‘Understanding school council’s roles and responsibilities’
Date: 28 April 2009
Program 2:
‘Meeting procedures, processes and dealing with people’
Date: 19 May 2009
Program 3:
‘Money matters for school council, including CASES21 Finance’
Date: 2 June 2009
Program 4:
‘School improvement – the role of council’
Date: 21 July 2009
School councillors may attend any or all of these sessions.
The venue for all sessions is the Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre, Cnr Bell Street and St Georges Road, Preston (Melway reference: Map 30 E2).
All sessions will be held from 6.45 pm until approximately 9.00 pm, and will include a light supper.

Program 1: Understanding school council’s roles and responsibilities
There is an opportunity to conduct program 1 with smaller clusters or networks of schools. This would require the schools concerned to provide a venue for the event. There will be no cost for the presenter but the date and time would need to be negotiated. Contact Patricia Quan (see contact details below) for further information about this.
